The Beacon student newspaper, by design


I spent what felt like a very long three years at my college newspaper, a weekly out of the University of Portland. Since I have some skill with page design software and can, in a pinch, draw a halfway decent picture, I often found myself in the position where I had to shape the look of the paper as well as report for it. For the most part, the rest of the staff handled all the visual stuff, but I was still wrist-deep in design issues regularly. Continue reading

Foundation president withdraws from gala

At the UP School of Nursing’s 75th Anniversary Gala, the school planned to honor Thomas Aschenbrener, president of the Northwest Health Foundation, which has awarded approximately $150,000 in grants to the school in past years. But he did not be attend, due to his concern over UP’s refusal to sign a nondiscrimination statement. Ashenbrener wrote he learned the UP administration “would no longer certify that it will not discriminate against lesbian, gay, transgendered and bisexual persons in the hiring of faculty and staff, or in selection of students.” Continue reading

Celebrating Molly

After graduating from the University of Portland, Molly Hightower went to Haiti to volunteer with disabled orphans. She was killed in the earthquake that struck the country early 2010. The Beacon’s coverage won a state award. Continue reading

XC coach donates kidney

Upon hearing his mother was diagnosed with a kidney disease and in need of a transplant, University of Portland cross-country coach Rob Connor sprang forward to donate his. Since his wasn’t compatible, he donated his to a stranger, whose husband donated to Connor’s mother. Continue reading
